How it feels
Three different phrases describe abnormalities of the curves of the back.
The Scoliotic curve is observed looking at a person from the back while the
Kyphotic curve focuses on the upper back when looking at the person from the
side. Lordosis typically refers to the lower back looking from the side.
Viewed from the back, the spine is supposed to be straight.
Scoliosis means that the back has undesirable lateral curves either in a "C"
or "S" shape. Even mild scoliosis often leads to muscle pain
in the back and pain elsewhere in the body because of postural compensation
patterns. The head forward posture increases the kyphotic curve. The exaggerated
hunch of the upper back is often associated
with a flat lower back and may develop into a Dowager's Hump. Too much curvature in the lower back is often referred to as swayback.
All these conditions lead to muscle
pain, but excessive lordosis can also contribute to disc problems in the
lower back. Improper spinal curves can become debilitating. |

Because hyperpronation causes a functional short leg, reducing hyperpronation will even the leg length and level the pelvis such that the spine is supported from a level plane. The body seeks to level and straighten itself naturally when properly supported. Reducing hyperpronation also rotates the pelvis posteriorly (to the back) which changes both the Kyphotic and Lordotic curves of the back. A small change in the curves of the back may be all that is needed to reduce back pain and improve posture. |

If you hyperpronate, your arches drop from non-weight bearing (sitting with your feet on the ground) to weight bearing (standing). When your arches drop, your ankles roll in and your heels lean in (evert) as illustrated in the picture. Even a small amount of hyperpronation can cause changes in the spinal curves. |
